Remember when smartphones first came out and all the cool things you could suddenly do on a device that fits in your pocket? As an early adopter of new tech, I vividly recall personalizing each new innovation bit-by-bit for my needs. Well, we’re at a similar turning point when it comes to AI assistants - and like mobile apps, you’ll soon be able to create your own without coding!
I’ve been geeking out hardcore on ChatGPT since it launched. But GPTs took things to another level - specialized AI tools I didn’t even realize how badly I needed. Now I’m hooked! Essentially personalized instances of ChatGPT you can tune to your needs, GPTs are like apps for AI. Each one handles specific functions - armed with tailored skills, data and instructions. I’d get one GPT to manage my calendar, another to analyze customer data, a third to help me categorize my QuickBooks transactions and so on.
The process is super simple too - I was shocked that no technical knowledge was required on my part. You start by chatting to prime the AI, then refine its capabilities by uploading relevant data and documentation for it to pull from. Sprinkle in some tweaks to make sure it does what I needed it to, and suddenly I have custom-crafted AI ready to hit the ground running on whatever niche task I assigned it.
To test things out, I built SundayRed.ai as my own personal golf coach. As a novice, the nuances of golf were super intimidating to internalize. Now I can chat casually about my swing issues, course strategies or mental game and my AI caddy serves up tailored tips and drills. My swing has gotten better and I don't feel like I'm bothering some golf pro with dumb questions.
I also created handy assistants like:
KenectEd - an AI tutor to help K-12 students prep for exams (https://chat.openai.com/g/g-K1qHZuGay-kenected)
SmarterVote - an unbiased voting guide aligning users to candidate issue positions (https://chat.openai.com/g/g-hMcEFqfMr-smartervote)
HouseVizit - mimicking a Ai triage nurse that would journal medical symptoms before a doctors appointment (https://chat.openai.com/g/g-CyrQKJp6C-housevizit) (not a substitute for professional healthcare advice!)
And this is just scratching the surface. Specialized GPTs will soon be everywhere - health, finance, design etc. And here’s the wildest part... Useful ones created by everyday users could turn into actual businesses in an AI app store! If SundayRed.ai takes off amongst golfers, I might see healthy subscription income from that passion project I whipped up in my spare time.
I’m eager to chat more about everyone’s ideas for potential GPT use cases and also hear about your own experiences with AI. Feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn to continue the conversation! The key is not getting left behind as AI transforms how businesses operate and services are delivered. It’s now more accessible than ever for us all to mold AI to our personal advantage too. So why not jump in and start creating your own versions? I promise it’s easier than you probably imagined. And who knows - you might just stumble upon the next big thing!
PS - I should also mention even the featured image for this article was created with AI! I generated it myself in MidJourney by describing what I envisioned. Just goes to show how rapidly these tools are evolving to augment all facets of our digital lives - yet another reason not to get left out of the fun!
